Cittadella: Journey to the Heart of the Stone Circle

Behind the walls of Cittadella lies a story you won’t encounter every day. As we approached this circular town, I wasn’t sure what to expect—only that something extraordinary awaited us. And trust me, this gem among Italy’s historic towns did not disappoint!

The idea to visit Venice came during a summer job at a hotel in the Italian Alps, in the small town of Natz. It was a job that opened my eyes and helped me appreciate the beauty of Italy—not just in its mountains, but also in its cities rich with history and culture. We had a car, and when we realized Venice was only a three-hour drive away, conveniently on our route home, we knew we had to go. This iconic city is famed for its romantic canals, narrow streets, and unforgettable atmosphere that draws visitors from all over the world. But along the way, we got a tip about a fascinating, ancient circular town—Cittadella.

Our first stop was this unique stone town. On the map, Cittadella appeared as a circular fortress straight out of ancient times. Its Renaissance architecture and historical landmarks testify to the rich past of this place. The stone-paved streets, built from thick blocks, radiated a Renaissance charm. As I walked through the town, I felt as though I might catch a glimpse of a knight or a Renaissance craftsman moving through the narrow alleys steeped in history and culture. To make it even more interesting, we stumbled upon market stalls selling everything from clothes and fruit to children’s toys, adding a lively, unexpected twist to our visit.

Points of Interest in Cittadella:

Cittadella offers plenty of attractions worth visiting.

• Old Walls and Gates: The original fortifications that protected the city are still well-preserved, and in some places, you can even walk along the walls. A walk along these walls offers a beautiful view of the surroundings and allows you to experience history firsthand.

• Main Square: The heart of the city with a fountain and historic buildings, where you can feel tradition and history at every step. This square is the perfect place to relax, have a coffee, and observe local life.

• Craft Museum: A small but interesting exhibition about medieval life and the crafts of the local inhabitants. Here, you can learn more about how people lived and worked in the past and admire the skill of the craftsmen who created unique works. The ticket price is 5€ for a full ticket and 3€ for students or seniors. We didn’t manage to visit it.

After visiting Cittadella, we set off on our journey to Venice, and although we were tired, the excitement of the upcoming destination energized us. When we arrived in Venice, we checked into our Airbnb. Our room was modest, in a larger house with several rooms, but conveniently located close to the bus and train stations, so everything was nearby. We were hungry. So, we searched for a local Italian pizzeria, Da Michelle, where we had a proper lunch, grabbed a beer, and immediately felt better. Fun fact: In this restaurant, you choose your food and drinks from a tablet, not a regular menu, just a tablet! The host suggested that before exploring the city, we should visit the local beach. So, we first headed there – but more about this stop next time!

After the beach, we decided to have an unforgettable evening and treat ourselves to a drink on the rooftop of one of the skyscrapers. As a reward for the long journey, we had our drink at Blind Spot – Cocktail Bar Venezia. This bar boasted an exceptional view of the illuminated city and the canals shimmering under the starry sky. Expect to pay around 15-20 € for a drink, but the experience was well worth it. Watching the sunset over Venice from above and the feeling in the air were unforgettable.

In the next post, we’ll dive into the heart of Venice – exploring not only its most beautiful landmarks but also its unmistakable Italian flavors. This city, which captivates everyone with its unique atmosphere, holds stories and experiences waiting for you at every corner. What surprises await you here? Find out in the next episode.
