After the first cold night, which definitely wasn’t the most comfortable, we woke up feeling like we had just fought a battle with the blanket. But still, we were abroad, and that gave us a boost. We quickly headed to the local store, where we bought fresh pastries for breakfast, and although we still had a bit of sleep in our eyes, we felt that this was going to be a day we wouldn’t forget. What we experienced and how we managed to achieve our plans, you’ll find out right now!

Morning Start: Great Location of Accommodation and Even Better Plans for the Day

After the first day, when we walked the streets of Dublin, we had a clear plan of where we were heading. We knew that the Guinness Storehouse was our main destination, and there was no way we were going to miss this legendary brewery. The second item on our list was a bonus, yet even more tempting – a desire that could only be fulfilled by a spontaneous move, with confidence and limitless possibilities.

Journey to the Guinness Storehouse: How the Irish Lady Came to Our Rescue

The bus was supposed to pick us up right from our accommodation, which sounded great. But then the first question arose: how do we pay? After our experience in London, we tried using a card with the driver, but something wasn’t quite right, and I admit, we looked a bit confused. Luckily, the kind Irish lady we had been pestering with questions at the bus stop, where she was waiting with us for the same bus, came to our rescue and paid for our ride. Big thumbs up for the friendly and helpful Irish – it’s definitely worth visiting them just for these kinds of experiences! Truly warm and accommodating people.

Guinness Storehouse: Self-Guided Tour, Funny Props, and… Beer with a Photo?!

For €34, the Guinness Storehouse offers a self-guided tour where you’ll learn exactly how this iconic beer is made. It’s a multi-floor complex that includes the actual production process. Famous for its dark color, creamy foam, and distinctive taste, you’ll see the entire process from ingredients, through milling, mashing, separation, brewing, cooling, fermentation, and finally to the tap – all with your own eyes. And as if that wasn’t enough, you’re rewarded with a tasting beer during the tour, and at the end, you’ll get a proper 0.5L pint of Guinness! That’s two pints of beer throughout the entire tour.

So what goes into making it? Guinness prides itself on the quality of its four basic ingredients – barley, water, hops, and yeast. First, the barley is ground, mixed with hot water, and the sugars are separated from the leftover barley. By adding hops and boiling, the beer gains its characteristic bitterness, while cooling prepares it for fermentation. The yeast then turns the sugars into alcohol, after which the beer matures, clarifies, gets packaged, and only then is it ready for tasting *(in a nutshell). You can read more about it HERE.

The tour is interspersed with interesting facts, like a fish riding a bike or an electric harp, referencing an old Irish saying: “A woman needs a man as much as a fish needs a bicycle.” Well, crickets built the roads, and frogs made buildings, inventions, right? Exceptions exist, like Mrs. Currie with polonium and radiation. You’ll also learn how they stored and transported beer on ships, and many other things. And the best part? A photo printed directly on the foam of the beer – like a 3D printer that will blow your mind. We couldn’t resist and had two pints there. Of course, the second one wasn’t included, and it cost us €8 each.

And here’s another treat – the story of the Guinness World Records. Did you know that Guinness is behind the creation of this legendary book? In 1951, the brewery manager Sir Hugh Beaver got into an argument with friends about which European bird is the fastest. The debate was so heated that he came up with the idea to create a book where similar questions would be answered, so these kinds of arguments could be settled quickly. That’s how the Guinness World Records was born, which later became a global bestseller and continues to inspire record enthusiasts to break records in even the most absurd categories.

View frtom the Viewing Bar: The Third Pint and a 360-Degree Panorama

After the entire tour, you’re treated to a bar with a view of the entire city of Dublin. With our third pint in hand, we marveled at the beauty of the city from above and, of course, we couldn’t help but think of our teacher, whom we ended up meeting there. Before leaving, we grabbed a few souvenirs from the shop on the ground floor.

Traditional Irish Meal: Sausages, Game Meat, and a Heap of Potatoes and Veggies

After the tour, we all (including our teacher and her friend) headed to the nearby The Brazen Head, reportedly the oldest pub in Dublin, dating back to 1198. There, we enjoyed a traditional brunch that ended up turning into a full-on lunch—sausages, potatoes, and veggies, simply delicious. And, of course, we had to pair it with some Irish whiskey. They had so many options that we just picked one we’d never heard of before. Exactly the kind of unique whiskey we were looking for. Not some Tullamore or Jameson (nothing against them, I wouldn’t turn them down), but we wanted to try something extra and unknown.

Water Calls! A Trip to Dalkey and Our First Touch with the Irish Sea

As true adventurers, we planned a trip to the sea – specifically to the picturesque district of Dalkey. After a 40-minute train ride from Tara Street station to Dalkey station, where we bought tickets from the machine for about 3-5€ one way, we found ourselves at Vico Bathing Place, a spot where you can swim between rocks, almost like in a jacuzzi. With a pleasant 8°C outside, choppy waves, and the sea providing us with a proper adrenaline rush, it was quite an experience. That day, the sea was definitely dangerous, but I had one clear goal – to touch the Irish Sea and taste it. Mission accomplished, even at the risk of almost being pulled in by a wave if I hadn’t held onto the railing. But as we know, “almost” doesn’t count. After the trip, we planned a well-deserved rest… or at least, that’s what we thought.
